Materials times two is not a unit cost

Labor, overhead, the batch that failed, the jar that cracked, Etsy fees, and packing tape all belong in the number. This file walks one SKU through every layer until you have a price that holds.

You fill the lines. The book holds the math.

Your Costing Workbook is on the table.

Dollar Piece Costing Workbook, forest-green clothbound hardcover with gold foil

Name the product you are costing

Work one SKU at a time. A 4 oz candle is not the same product as an 8 oz candle. Batch size is how many finished units this round produces.

Materials that went into the batch

List every input you bought for this batch. The workbook divides the total by finished units later. Do not skip the lid, label, or wick tab.

Put a number on your time

Include pour, cure checks, labeling, packing, and cleanup. If you would not do it for free for a stranger, it belongs here.

Overhead that keeps the studio open

Rent, insurance, website, software, tools that wear out. Enter a monthly total, then how many units you typically finish in a month.

Waste, defects, and the jar that cracked

If 1 in 20 units is unsellable, the other 19 have to carry that cost. Enter the percent of the batch you do not sell.

Packing, booths, and the cut platforms take

Shipping supplies per unit, a share of booth or market fees, listing platform fees, and card processing.

The real number for this SKU

Retail is set so that after selling fees you keep a 50% gross margin on the selling price. Wholesale is half of retail. These are planning estimates from the figures you entered, not financial advice.

Per-unit cost$0
Suggested retail$0
Suggested wholesale$0
