Mailers, tape, and kraft paper sit on the order that left. They are not a studio expense you get to call overhead and forget.
If the buyer paid $5 for shipping and the mailer, tape, label, and ten minutes at the table came to $3.80, the leftover is not extra profit until you counted it. If it came to $6.10, the unit is already short. Platform shipping shortcuts hide this. Etsy can charge the buyer a number that has nothing to do with what you spent. Cost your kit. Then decide if the listed shipping covers it.

That $1.10 did not vanish. It came out of the mug, the candle, or the soap you thought you had already priced. Makers call it overhead because overhead is the drawer where numbers go to die. A mailer is as real as a wick. If it goes out with the product, it belongs on the product.
Build the kit once, then stop guessing
Stand at the table and pack one of each path you actually use. Soft goods in a mailer. Jars in a box. Wholesale in a carton. Write every object your hands touch. Include the thank-you card you forgot was 22 cents. Include the extra box you keep just in case, at the rate you actually grab it. If one in five jars needs the bigger box, the kit is not the small box. It is a blended box.
Postage is separate from the kit and still on the same unit. If you charge a flat $5 and postage is $4.20 on a good day and $7.80 on a bad zip code, you need an average from the last fifty labels, not a memory of the cheap ones. Refunds on lost packages belong here too, as a small rate, the same way waste belongs on the pour.
Packing is a sequence with minutes
Pick and check
Find the SKU, check the label, catch the dent. Two minutes that are not free because they prevent a worse box.
Wrap
Tissue, fill, the object in the middle. This is where jars get expensive and soap stays cheap. Cost the SKU you are holding, not an average of all SKUs.
Seal and label
Tape, printer, the crooked label you redo. Redo rate goes on the kit, same as a wasted tin.
Scan and note
Platform click, thank-you card, the photo you send if you still do that. If you stopped doing the photo, take the minutes off. If you still do it, leave them on.
Drop
Walk, drive, or pickup. Split a post-office run across the boxes in the crate, not onto one unlucky order.
Eight minutes at $22 an hour is $2.93. On Kit B, supplies plus minutes is already past $5.50 before the stamp. That is why a $5 shipping charge can be a discount you did not mean to give.
The platform trap. Calculated shipping can look like it saved you. Sometimes it did. Sometimes the buyer paid $8.24 and you still spent $6.10 plus minutes, and you never noticed because the dashboard called it shipping income. Pull ten orders. Write charged vs spent vs minutes. If you will not do ten, you are not costing shipping. You are trusting a progress bar.
Free shipping is not free. It is a sticker that absorbed the kit. If you offer it, the retail price has to hold Kit B and the minutes and the postage average. Otherwise you moved the hole from the shipping line to the product line and called it a gift to the customer.
Wholesale cartons are their own kit. Do not use the Etsy mailer number on a shop order. Split the carton across the units in it. If a shop wants special inserts, that is a different kit, which means a different wholesale number. See the wholesale note before you say yes to twelve mugs in a custom crate.
Holiday weeks lie. You pack faster and you also grab the bigger box more often, print more labels that fail, and drive an extra post-office run because the Friday pickup was missed. Cost a normal week and a December week separately if December is real volume for you. One blended kit that assumes July is how January feels broke after a loud December.
If you ship from a table in a one-bedroom, your drop minutes are not a warehouse scan. Write the walk. If you now use a pickup at the studio door, take the drive off and leave the pack minutes on. Recost when the path changes. The kit is allowed to get cheaper. It is not allowed to stay imaginary.
The workbook walks packing after materials and labor, not as a footnote. Put the kit on the unit so a busy shipping week does not erase the week at the bench.
